[Shepherding the sheep with One heart] Jesus Who Has Overcome the Temptation

“Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.”(Matthew 4:1)

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom, knowledge, and the root of all knowledge.  However, the devil dared to try and capture Jesus Christ with his knowledge. When the devil tempted Jesus to be a hero by making stones into bread, Jesus said,

"It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)

Then the devil said to Jesus to throw Himself down.“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:11-12)

The devil asked Jesus to confirm whether what the Lord had said was true or not. Jesus answered him,“It is also written,‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test’”.  (Matthew 4:7).  This means that we don’t need to test or doubt the Word of God, but believe the Word as it is.  The devil’s plan to seize Jesus and to make Him tempt the Lord failed.

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour.  And he tempted Jesus, offering to give them all to Him, if Jesus bowed down and worshipped him.  Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!  For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only’”.  (Matthew 4:10).  In the end, the devil was defeated and left Jesus.

Even if an evil spirit works in our faith life, we should not accept it.  Just as the Lord won the victory against the devil’s temptation, we must win the victory in our faith life.
